Calahonda: coast between two worlds

Good to be rolling down this stretch of coast again. You are passing through Sitio de Calahonda, a place that sits almost exactly halfway between Fuengirola and Marbella. It belongs to the vast municipality of Mijas, which climbs from the shoreline high into the mountains behind you. That geography mattered deeply to the people who lived here long before resort towns existed. The old village of Mijas perched itself deliberately up on the hillside, keeping watch over the Mediterranean and the coastal road below. From those white terraces, a fisherman or a farmer could see ships approaching from far out at sea — sometimes trading vessels, sometimes something more threatening. Calahonda itself, down at sea level, was for centuries simply open coastline, a passage between the fortified port of Fuengirola and the old fishing settlement that would eventually become Marbella. The land here changed hands between Muslim and Christian rulers for hundreds of years before becoming the quiet coastal district you see today.
