The Hidden History of Los Altos

Nicholas Kristmas constructed an eighteen-room farmhouse here in 1924, but the property took a strange turn only four years later. By 1928, the site earned a reputation for local infamy under a series of changing aliases, including the Blue and Gold Kennel Club and the Whitehall Distillery. It functioned as a hub for illicit activity during an era when the quiet character of the region was far from established. Before these developments, the broader area experienced significant seismic shifts, specifically a historic earthquake that struck the vicinity in 1858. The transformation of this land from agricultural apricot orchards to a residential community was largely compressed into the three decades between 1950 and 1980. Today, the city maintains strict zoning laws to ensure that commercial activity remains concentrated in specific corridors, leaving the rest of the neighborhood to quiet residential life.
